The oldest mine in the Americas — copper worked from the 1530s; Spanish operations from 1544

Status

Closed 1998-2001; the open pit has filled with mineral-rich water forming a lake roughly 1,000 x 800 m and 60 m deep, with extensive galleries remaining. No known plans to reopen. Any revival would be a full reconstruction of a flooded historic district.

Worked successively by enslaved and free people of colour, British companies (1830-1882), American owners from 1902, then the Cuban state after 1959. Coordinates corroborated by two sources (~0.9 km apart).
